Look for the sign with the two birds, and you’ve found the Sparrows Lodge. When it was first built in 1952 for actor Don Castle and his wife, Zetta, the property was known as Castle’s Red Barn. In 2013, it underwent a full restoration, but its spirit remains the same, and guests often remark on its rustic yet modern feel. Sparrow’s Lodge is a 21-and-up property, with 20 guests rooms. There are no televisions or telephones in the rooms, to ensure that guests are unplugged during their stay. It’s been said Sparrows Lodge feels like a summer camp for adults, with horseshoes outside, a communal barn, an outdoor fire pit, a vegetable garden, and a pool. The Barn Kitchen whips up simple yet delightful breakfasts for guests as part of their room rate. At lunch, sandwiches, salads, and other small bites are available for purchase, and on Chicken Wednesdays and Steak Saturdays, a family-style dinner is served for a small number of guests and outside visitors, reservations required. The menu, prepared by Chef Gabriel Woo, is never repetitive, surprising guests who are lucky enough to attend a dinner more than once.

About this property

The history: Originally built as Castle’s Red Barn in 1952 by MGM actor Don Castle, it was one of the original resort getaways for Hollywood elite. Legend has it that iconic actress Elizabeth Montgomery had her first marriage at the Red Barn. The property also has had incarnations as Catalina Palms, El Rancho Lodge, and now Sparrows Lodge. The Lodge was fully restored in 2013 and many of the original buildings are still in use with modern updates retaining the charm of the original Red Barn. The Lodge: Sparrows Lodge is a completely restored 1950s retreat. You will be welcomed roadside with a simple hand-painted sign with two sparrows. The Lodge has a modern rustic vibe that carries through to our rooms, communal barn, outdoor fire pit, and vegetable garden. The 20 rooms feature exposed beam ceilings, russet red walls, concrete floors with inlaid pebbles, and butterfly chairs. Swiss Army blankets top plush mattresses, and instead of closets you’ll find a metal footlocker along with hooks and hangers. Our bathrooms feature rain showers, designer toiletries and many include horse troughs as bathtubs. Most rooms have private patios. All rooms come with A/C and heat and ceiling fans. With no televisions or phones in the rooms, there is an environment of ease and simplicity. The Lodge’s barn serves a simple breakfast included in your room rate consisting of muffins, yogurt, granola, fruit and toast. Relax by our pool where umbrellas and misters keep things cool or play a game of horseshoes. To stay hydrated enjoy our special selection of microbrews, wine, champagne, specialty drinks and sodas. In the evening, gather around the fire pit and meet new friends. Location: Sparrows Lodge is located in south Palm Springs. It’s walking distance to Koffi and the simple and delicious Appertito Italian deli. We have lots of other great dinning and drinking spots in town. Explore the area on one of our bikes. Outdoor activities await at Joshua Tree National Park, the Living Desert, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, and Tahquitz Canyon and Indian Canyons. For local shopping, check out unique design and clothing shops on North Palm Canyon Drive or visit Hedge and the many great shops on Perez Design row in Cathedral City. Lots of interesting estate sale and “vintage finds” shops are in the area. Ask us for our favorites in town or near by. Pioneertown is a fun day trip, as is horse ride at the nearby Smoke Tree stables.
