Hotel Backstory
The Cole Hotel fully embraces its mid-century modern roots — and the guests love it. Christina Martinez, The Cole’s front desk and housekeeping supervisor, says when guests check out, they always rave about the vibe of the property — retro, with contemporary touches. The Cole Hotel fully embraces its mid-century modern roots — and the guests love it. Christina Martinez, The Cole’s front desk and housekeeping supervisor, says when guests check out, they always rave about the vibe of the property — retro, with contemporary touches. While the decor harkens back to the 1950s, The Cole is also the first and only solar powered hotel in Palm Springs, and people appreciate that it is “very eco-friendly,” Christina says. The Cole first opened its doors in 1959 as the Bahama Hotel. Today, there are 30 rooms with three different floor plans — the Cole King, Cole Suite, and Pool Suite, plus the 600-square-foot Honeymoon Suite, complete with a private balcony. Before reopening in 2020 as The Cole, the hotel went through a two-year renovation, and everything from the beds to the towels to the paint are brand new. The pool area and bedrooms are “beautiful,” Christina says, and as it’s a 21-and-over property, The Cole attracts groups of friends who gather for bachelorette parties or reunions. Its location on North Palm Canyon Drive is also perfect, Christina says, because the hotel is “very close to downtown but not too close, so people who don’t enjoy the night noise from being directly downtown can enjoy our property.” The Cole actively sanitizes its rooms, and at check-in, guests receive welcome packages that include a face mask and hand sanitizer. Service is everything, Christina says, and the staff goes above and beyond to make sure all guests feel welcome and have a great stay.
About this property
This 30 room boutique hotel, home to the acclaimed Freddie’s Kitchen, is the return of a mid-century gem in Palm Springs. Once known as the Bahama Hotel, this classic masterpiece was built in 1959 with floorplan design by San Clemente draftsman Raymond Devore, stonework by mason John Francis Gallerani, and the hotel’s quirky modernist exterior design by local architect Hugh Kaptur. More recently, the property underwent a sympathetic and painstaking rehabilitation by new owner Mark Weis with the help of general manager David Smith, project manager Mat Rogers, and a small army of building preservationists. This renovation has captured the modernism roots and mid-century pedigree of Palm Springs. Dog friendly and adults only, the Cole Hotel boasts spacious floor plans appointed with modern amenities like individual Nespresso machines, charming mid-century mahogany Victrola bluetooth stereos, retro bar fridges, nightstand charging ports, 4K smart TVs, and the Stearns & Foster Airdale — the most comfortable bed you will ever experience. The rooms have been colorfully decorated in the “Palm Springs style” courtesy of talented local design firm H3K. All of our rooms offer breathtaking views of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway with the majestic Mount San Jacinto as a backdrop. Or, you can cast your eyes onto the guests frolicking in the new courtyard style pool uniquely designed to reflect the shape of the hotel. One of the most impressive rooms in the house is our Honeymoon Suite, which offers guests a spacious 600 square foot studio with wraparound windows and private balcony boasting views all the way to Joshua Tree and beyond. This suite includes a luxurious master bathroom with soaking tub and shower for two or more. You’ll wonder why you ever bothered staying anywhere else. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, upcoming wedding, a romantic getaway, or just looking for a relaxing enjoyable escape, this venue has it all. It is our goal to make the Cole an experience our guests will remember long after they have left this desert oasis. We look forward to seeing you soon.
