Father’s Day Fun In Palm Springs

It’s June, and you know what that means — it’s time to forget Father’s Day! 

One year, my dad skipped church (I’m kidding, he never went to church) so my mom and my sibling and I went and learned it was Father’s Day. Gah! If it had been at the Baptist Bible school my parents sent us off to in the summer, we could have made something out of glue and macaroni, but this was the Presbyterian church, and they weren’t crafty. It was also the 1960s, and on Sundays nothing was open, so there was no way to remedy the situation. We went home defeated and, I’ll admit, a little nervous.

When we got there, Dad was moving the lawn. One look and we knew that he knew we didn’t know, and then he just wiped his brow and continued riding his mower (we had less than three-quarters of an acre, so that was kinda boujee). I now realize that is exactly what he wanted to be doing on that day, yard work, because it was away from the three females who vexed him 365 days a year. 

I hear they’re making dads a little bit more cuddly these days, so they’ll likely appreciate doing something with their kids, and I’m here to help you out. If you’re grown, you don’t need my help. Everyone knows it’s brunch for mom and dad gets to watch sports and drink beer all day.

For dads who have young’uns and like spending time with them (hopefully all of you!), bring the family down to the most laid back and grooviest little big place in the state of California: Palm Springs.

There’s quite a few, and I’d love to tell you about all the wonderful and unique things offered by each, however this is about what to do once you score your stay. I encourage you to click and peruse, as well as add your own amenity filters. 

Now, if everyone’s gone tinkle and buckled up, let’s get this motor running and get out on the highway, looking for adventure…any more of that and I may have to pay royalties, so away we go:

Edutainment

Museum of Ancient Wonders — Comprised of 375 artifacts and fossils (many are replicas), the Museum of Ancient Wonders provides an opportunity for visitors of all ages to immerse themselves into the mesmerizing life of a pharaoh, the legends of Greek mythology, and ancient African mysticism, and to experience the international fossil record in one of the most comprehensive and diverse fossil collections ever assembled and rarely seen outside of their respective museums.

Windmill Tours — From golf cart tours to self-driving tours, it’s all about the energy of these turbines, how they work, and how much electricity they produce. I hear it’s marvelous. Likely not for toddlers, though. 

Palm Springs Air Museum — Climb aboard old planes, see memorabilia from the flyers, and even ride on an old warbird.

Next year, Discovery Children’s Museum of the Desert will be open again, and it’s full of wonder. They won’t let you in without a kid, but I got a tour once, and I wanted to play with everything.

Fascination

Create Center for the Arts — It’s hard to believe we have a place this special in our little valley, but we do. Formerly a high-end doggie and people spa, it’s been repurposed into a feast for creativity. Please, do yourself and your kids a favor and check out their website and just go. I can’t tell you everything here, but if there’s a smidge of an artist in you and you’ve got imagination, this place is a dreamcatcher. On top of that, one of the best bakeries in the valley, Aspen Mills, has a satellite shop there, and there is an art store. The whole place feels like an elegant castle. Bonus — they kept the salt cave!  

Rancho Mirage Observatory — The witching hour is 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. Starts in the lobby of the library. There is no cost and no registration. Tours are limited to about 20 people. Also check out their stargazing at night.

Silly Fun

Cabazon Dinosaurs — Mr. Rex, Dinny, and their more than 50 dinosaur friends provide perfect photo ops. The dinosaur walk features a dino dig and fossil panning that kids will enjoy. 

 Jurassic Wonders — I guess we love dinosaurs? This is a new installation on Highway 111 in the vicinity of the Mary Pickford Theater. They’re pretty ferocious looking — not like Dino from The Flintstones. Great photo ops.

Boomers — Are you a golfing dad? You can scratch a little of that itch at Boomers mini-golf, and maybe hit some video games and the go-carts. They also have a batting cage, but I’ve never seen anyone use it.  

Living Desert — Real live exotic animals doing real life stuff so you may have to explain, “When two lions love each other very much….” Or, you can get them interested in feeding the giraffes instead.

Get Air Trampoline Park — Something for kids of all ages. Seriously, go to their website and check it out and tell them I sent you. They have no idea who I am. It’ll be fun!

Skate Park — If you’re an action parent with an action kid, this is where you want to be.

Into The Wild

Lake Arrowhead — Take a ride on the Lake Arrowhead Queen (it’s a boat), and/or take water skiing lessons. Go to Santa’s Village where you can zipline and learn to fly fish. Or just have lunch and an ice cream.

Magic Mountain at Big Bear Lake boasts:

The Alpine Slide, Southern California’s only authentic, year-round bobsled experience. Take a chair lift ride to the top, then control your speed as you twist and turn down a quarter-mile-long track. Check the website for ages/heights. 

The Soaring Eagle, where you whoosh through the air at incredible speeds.

The Mineshaft Coaster is the first and only mountain coaster in California. On the way up, check out the breathtaking views, then you control your speed through thrilling hairpin turns, dips, tunnels, bridges and 360-degree corkscrews on a mile long track.

There’s also go-karts, an 18-hole mini golf course, and … drumroll please … a double water slide!

The One With The Bachelorette’s Guide To Palm Springs

Congratulations! You found “the one!” And now you’re in a Friends episode, “The One Where Your Name Here is Having Their Bachelorette Party.” Your bash is going to be as memorable as your wedding because you’re having it in paradise, a.k.a. Palm Springs. Great choice! When you’re not out and about, you can enjoy a cocktail or mocktail lounging poolside in the sun with your own Rachel, Phoebe, and Monica.

But first things first: you’ll need a place to stay, and a buyout is just the ticket. Our boutique hotels have quite a few options to choose from, all with different aesthetics and budgets. Let’s get going:

Bachelorette party properties in Palm Springs

Limón Palm Springs — Six large suites with private patios, a shared kitchen, and dining area. Mostly steel and windows, with pops of bright yellow — like the sun here in Palm Springs, and just as warm and inviting.

Yara Hotel — Seven rooms and three suites all done up in modernist (what I call) Moroccan. Each room/suite is steps away from the pool. It’s great for a smaller party, or you can double up. There’s a heated saltwater pool and a firepit. With its clean lines and white sandy exterior, it’s the opposite of fussy.

The Marley — With its pink and black motif, it’s reminiscent of the swanky Beverly Hills Hotel. This nine bedroom and nine bathroom property has a gorgeous Viking catering kitchen, a spacious pool, and a fire pit. Able to accommodate up to 22 guests.

Dive — Eleven rooms, yummy property with a great pool. Lots of places to have one-on-ones and the rooms are delicious, just like the food. Oh, did I mention there’s a soundproof room so you can keep the party going after the 10 p.m. noise curfew?

Spirit of Sofia — She’s a very pretty girl, with two pools: one is a lazy teardrop dipping pool, and the other a rectangular beauty. There are 20 rooms and the outdoor space is divine — it’s all very posh and breezy country home.

Trixie Motel — While it’s not cool to bring your bridal party to a gay bar, it is cool to rent out the entire Trixie Motel, designed and owned by Trixie Mattel of Ru Paul’s Drag Race fame. It’s all very Barbie, and it’s absolutely memorable. Seven rooms and suites around the teardrop pool.

Throw your own party

There are a lot of great places to go for a meal, but you can elevate the experience by getting a personal chef for a day, a night, or for the entire weekend. Here are all the personal chefs with five star ratings in Palm Springs:

That’s The Spirit — No one has to pour or get stuck behind the bar making drinks if you get your own bar/bartender. 

MOGO Silent Disco — Palm Springs has a noise curfew, but if you hire Mogo Silent Disco, you can party into the wee hours (as long as you don’t sing too loud!)

Daytime playtime

PSAir — It’s like a plane but it’s on the ground. Sundays are Broadway Bound brunches. 

Reforma brunches — Held on Saturdays. Themed, and you’re encouraged to dress up. Past themes: Disney Princess, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift (1989) … you get the idea. Need a costume? Go thrifting.

Play Lounge — All the games, all the fun. Non-fussy food, fussy bevvies.

420 Bank — Dispensary with pool, pinball, board games, giant chess, and live entertainment.

Boomers — Celebrate the kid in you with mini-golf, a huge arcade, bumper boats, and Go-Karts.

Social Cycle — Get your cardio and your drink on by pedaling to some of the fun bars in PS.

Hike Tahquitz waterfall — Go early. It’s gorgeous and not very hard. About one hour hike in, 35 out. Great way to start your day.

Horseback riding — Smoketree Stables is the place to experience Palm Springs the way the pioneers did.

Escape Room Palm Springs — Show off your bridal teamwork by solving the crime and getting out before the timer goes off. I had a blast.

Earthy day trips under an hour

Giggling with Goats — Holy goat yoga in Indio! 

Integratron (it’s a sound bath with an interplanetary connection), then lunch at Pappy & Harriet’s, followed by a self-guided Pioneertown tour. Insta-worthy.

Joshua Tree — It’s a national park with rock formations and Joshua trees. Uncontaminated by settlements, it’s planet Earth in all of her unmanned glory. There is an artist’s scene in town.

Late night drinks

Truss & Twine — Very L.A.; open until 12:30 a.m.

Seymour’s — A small speakeasy open until midnight, located in/at Mr. Lyons.

Reforma — Nightclub open until 2 a.m. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Tryst Bar & Lounge — On Indian Canyon, open until 2:30 a.m. (industry spot).

Fireside Lounge — This is a local’s spot. Nothing fancy, but has pool tables outside and karaoke inside. You’ll have to take an Uber. It’s near the airport but in the dispensary concentrated section. Open ’til 2 a.m.

Where To Stay In Palm Springs For The Dinah

It’s that time of year, when Palm Springs throws The Dinah — the biggest, baddest lesbian party in the world. 

Running from Sept. 20-24, The Dinah will be held at the big hotels, and if you like being in the thick of it 24/7, then read no further. If you’d prefer your own getaway from the getaway, then I have some suggestions. If you’re coming in a group, I have ideas for that, too.

Palm Springs boutique hotels for groups

The Marley is a hotel with one rule: you gotta rent the whole place. From their website: “The Marley isn’t like all the other Palm Springs boutique hotels. In fact, it isn’t like any other boutique hotel. After all, we designed it to fit the exact needs of one unique group of guests at a time. So you and your friends can relax like Hollywood royalty — in total privacy.”

The Three Ten Hotel, recently renovated and remodeled, is a mid-century modern property that’s rented out to just one group at a time. The gated hotel’s seven rooms are all brightly decorated and have queen-sized beds, kitchenettes, full bathrooms, and patios. There is also an arcade/game room and washer and dryer on the property, and all bedrooms have a view of the sparkling central pool. On top of all that, there’s a firepit, barbecue and outdoor dining space, lounge chairs, hot tub, and a hammock, surrounded by lovely desert landscaping. No on-site staff.

Limón Palm Springs is a one-group-at-a-time property, and its “celebration specialists” will help with everything from reserving transportation and golf tee-times to hiring a gourmet chef to make a delicious meal onsite. Upon arrival, guests are greeted with a charcuterie board featuring locally-sourced ingredients, plus chilled bottles of prosecco and sparkling rosé.

Blackhaus is a truly unique space. Just look at it! I’m not going to say any more — I just urge you to look for yourself.

More cool places to stay during The Dinah

Dive! Stunning hotel, marvelous pool, and exceptionally well-curated rooms. There’s also a soundproof after-hours room, so you can continue the party well into the morning.

Drift, one of our newest hotels, is located downtown and has a plethora of social events. It’s a stunning hotel, just steps away from everything.

Villa Royale is a 38-room hotel in the south end of Palm Springs. Built in 1947, it was owned and managed by a woman named Evelyn Pell. You can stay in her namesake villa, a private residence with its own hot tub and garden.

Old Ranch Inn  is done in a western style, and damn it is gorgeous! The eight-suite, dog-friendly property is completely walled and gated for your privacy. It’s centered around the pool, which is heated to a perfect 88 degrees. Old Ranch Inn is an intimate hideaway to call your very own, and as a bonus, it’s located one block west of Palm Canyon, making downtown your playground.

You’re A Star: Karaoke And Open Mics In Palm Springs

In the mid-1980s, I was touring with a cover band for the DoD. When we were in Okinawa, a couple of the flyboys took us to a bar and I saw and sang karaoke for the first time ever. I’d never even heard of it at the time but came home and told all my friends. Yes, dear readers, it was I that brought karaoke to these (not so) United States.

Disclaimer: parts of that story are wildly untrue; I think you can guess which ones. 

But that’s all to say, I get it. Occasionally your inner star needs to come out for the evening. So, you dress up like the celebrity you are, and hit your favorite karaoke bar.

But when you’re not in your own town, you can’t go to your favorite spots and see your favorite hosts and sing your favorite songs. And sometimes, just like a craving for (fill in your favorite food here), that diva inside you wants to come out and shine a light tonight! 

It’s going to be okay. I’m here to help. 

Karaoke spots in Palm Springs

The Retro Room — Nightly. It’s a tiny bar, but that’s part of the charm. Reminds me of Chicago bars. You’ll be singing, encouraging other people to sing, and maybe having a random duet. You never know who might show up. It’s YOU! You’re showing up and showing out.

V Wine Lounge — Wednesday nights. Taking a break from the fantastic ladies of song appearing Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, you – you little superstar — are subbing in every Wednesday evening. Great drinks, mocktails, wine selection and bar food. Plus, it’s a very fun and kitschy mid-century modern establishment. It is not pretentious or stuffy and the owner is as delicious as the food. (Very!)

Streetbar — Every third Thursday of the month from 6 to 8 p.m. I know! Once a month is a long time to wait for a chance to show off your pipes, but Streetbar has a lot going on, what with nightly fun and all. They don’t have a website, so that link gets you the address. They’re on Facebook if you need to look at pictures.

The Village — Tuesdays. Just two spaces north of 420 Bank & Dispensary, this place recently had an overhaul. They have live music, bar food, and cocktails, but no bar games. Enjoy the jumping dance floor, outdoor patio, and nightlife (open until 2 a.m.). 

Beforehand getting your karaoke on, grab a bite at Thai House, Fuzion Five, or for French/Belgian bistro food try Pomme Frite for some mussels. And when you’re done making people weep with your talent, go dance it off at Reforma nightclub just a stone’s throw away.

Fireside Lounge — Tuesdays, starts at 9 p.m. This bar is like no other in Palm Springs. It’s mostly locals, and a lot of entertainers stop to hit the mic. Way off the beaten track, it’s off Ramon near the dispensaries at 696 Oleander (no website). Very fun dive bar.

Hunter’s — Tuesdays. One of the OG gay nightclubs in town. Bring your A game.

Play Lounge — You will bring Joel Baker your sheet music, and you will sing, songbird, sing dammit!

Palm Canyon Roadhouse — Sundays at 4 p.m. Their website is a mess. This used to be with a full band, not sure what’s going on. Definitely call. They might answer.

Oscar’s — With Michael Orland, former pianist, arranger, vocal coach, and associate musical director at American Idol.
