The Desert Paradise is More Than a Hotel

Yes, this men’s clothing-optional resort is a place where travelers from around the world gather for the vacation of their dreams — for some, that means they’ll lounge around the pool from sun up to sundown, while others will use it as a home base as they explore everything Palm Springs has to offer. But with its welcoming vibe, the Desert Paradise also routinely attracts repeat guests, who view the hotel as a second home.

General manager Charles Zalepeski says that is exactly the atmosphere they aimed for.

“I want it to feel like people are visiting family, a place where they feel comfortable and right at home,” Zalepeski explains. “It’s a place where everything’s going to be taken care of, from start to finish.”

The 12-room Desert Paradise puts its guests first, ensuring that staffers go above and beyond when it comes to service. The property boasts a pool, spa, outdoor shower, steam room, dry sauna, and lush grounds. Since purchasing the hotel in November 2020, the owners have spruced up the rooms with new furniture and improved on the already offered continental breakfast. Future plans may include having some rooms with kitchenettes, so guests who want to stay for weeks at a time can really feel at home.

“It’s just a gem, with so much opportunity,” Zalepeski says.

Owner Jim Brown operated a bed and breakfast in Key West for 16 years, and says the Desert Paradise was a perfect example of “the first rule of real estate: location, location, location.” Buying a hotel during a pandemic has been challenging, Brown says, but “we’re bullish and know once the restrictions are lifted, we’re going to be off-the-wall busy.”

Because it is a smaller hotel with separate exteriors and no elevators or common rooms, the Desert Paradise is the perfect place to enjoy a socially-distanced escape. Brown and Zalepeski both agree that safety is paramount, and this feeling of security is just one reason why guests want to book their next stay while still on property.
