Hotel Backstory
Everything about El Cid Palm Springs is stunning, but there’s something truly special about its pool area. “It really is dramatic with the black and white cabanas, loungers, and sofas,” owner Tim Spry says. “At night, with just the chandeliers on in the cabanas and the landscape lighting, with that killer view of the mountains, it’s kind of magical.” El Cid opened in the fall of 2016, after several months of construction. It’s different from a typical hotel — El Cid can only be rented by one group at a time, giving guests the opportunity to really make themselves at home. There are seven bedrooms and bathrooms spread across six bungalow-style units, with most offering kitchenettes. The property had “good bones,” Tim says, and while upgrades were made, he found the existing design meshed well with his vision for El Cid. “The former owner loved concrete floors and had kept to a simple, bright white color palette,” Tim says. “We furnished the whole place, added three cabanas by the pool, and a dining cabana on a grassy area nearby. We love black and white striped fabric, so we added awnings in the same style as the cabanas.” The well-being of everyone who stays at El Cid is of the utmost importance, and the property has strict cleaning protocols. “The safety of our guests and staff is paramount,” Tim says.
About this property
Enjoy frozen Negronis around the fire pit. Read an embarrassingly cheesy novel in the hammock. Or just kick back beside our 40-foot commercial-size pool with its four brand new cabanas (including a dining tent). Surrounded by walls and tall hedges, you’ll be far from the crowds but just a short stroll from downtown Palm Springs. We designed El Cid to be a different kind of hotel — one shaped by our own luxury travel experiences. Over the years, the things we’ve come to appreciate most are simplicity, comfort, and thoughtful design. As smaller boutique hotels and high-end vacations have created an ever-changing, ever-expanding range of accommodations, guest preferences have evolved as well. It’s no longer just about seeing and being seen. Or choosing the largest property with the most amenities. It’s about spending time with friends and family in a more intimate way. On your own terms. Without needless drama or distractions. We designed El Cid to accommodate only one select group at a time. Which means you and your friends can relax like Hollywood royalty—in total privacy and seclusion. Six completely new, bungalow style units (a total of seven bedrooms and seven bathrooms) offer polished concrete floors, lots of leather and reclaimed wood, and a fun, California boho style. Most units offer living and dining areas and kitchenettes with wine fridges. All have fast internet and extra-large 4K TVs. The way we see it, if all you want is to be left alone, why pay a huge overhead for lots of staff? Like us, you probably don’t mind walking five feet to the bar to fix your own gin and tonic, right? Of course, our concierge will be happy to arrange whatever services your group does require, from housekeeping and catering to yoga, spa services, and entertainment. That way you can pay for the services you want instead of the ones you don’t. Think of it as an a la carte menu built around your own personal preferences. In a town where over the top design is expected, we’ve purposely emphasized restraint. We’ve kept things casual, yet undeniably comfortable. Best of all, our beautiful setting, within walking distance of downtown Palm Springs, makes El Cid ideal for all kinds of important events, from birthdays and bachelorette parties to family reunions and corporate retreats.
